February 6, 2010

So, a not so good end to an otherwise good week. Today my cat, Sassy, 6 years old, died. The sad thing about it was I never got to see her again alive since when I had originally left home after winter break. They don’t know what caused it, it was all very sudden and unexpected. It was the first pet I had that died, but my little sister took it really hard. I wasn’t able to get home until recently, and it was sad not to be around when my little sister was upset.

Other than that, just getting ready for Bach Fest auditions, mine being on Monday. Unfortunately it just adds one more thing to my already frantic Monday schedule, and it makes it hard for me to get an audition in. I managed to squeeze it in in my twenty five minutes between Hist and Lit and Ochem. It’s not ideal, since it doesn’t give me any time to warm up before hand, but since violins only have auditions on mondays, there’s not much else I can do.

Peace

Still Trying to Figure This Out

Let me start with this: I want to be a lawyer. And I’m pretty sure I want to be a corporate lawyer.

Now what’s the best path to get there? I have no clue. Whatever I think is best for my future. And how in the world am I supposed to know? I’m only a freshman, but luckily that gives me the time to change and think about things.

So I’ve been considering adding on a 2nd minor in Business because corporate lawyer and business go together. Plus they have 3 classes on business law which I would like to take. The thing is - the minor is 28 credits. And, after spending about 2 hours working on this, I tried to figure out all the classes I would have to take in order to graduate on time. This requires taking 17 credits every single semester until Spring 2013, when I’m supposed to graduate. It’s CRAZY!

So it’s all crazy because anything could change at any time. I’m even considering dropping my other minor so I can fit Business in. Oh, the choices are infinite in possibility.

P.S. - I’m not leaving my dorm today. We have like 6 inches of snow on the ground. And as much as I love snow, I hate walking in it.

BSA Soul Food Dinner

Yesterday night was awesome for someone who is a meatatarian…. I have no clue if I spelled that right…

Anyways, an organization on Campus, The Black Student Alliance, put on the annual Soul food dinner. For $10, you got baby back ribs, pork ribs, beef ribs, bakes beans, collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken… It was DELICIOUS!!!!

It’s just a great event hosted by a great organization on campus that does so much for B-W and the community. Nonetheless, I had more than enough of my fill of food and slowly passed out due to a food coma.

I need to start training for next years dinner, I will even eat more than this year! Muahahaha

First Hard Week

This marks the end of my first hard week of the semester, and I’d say I managed it fairly well. It’s just that I had a few papers to write and a ton of reading. I’m getting used to the huge amount of reading I’m doing this semester, especially considering how much I like some of it. This book we read for Lit. of Rock and Roll, “Great Jones Street”, was pretty dang awesome. Like, up-there-in-my-all-timers awesome, I think I’m bold enough to say. It’s about a rock star who retreats from his stardom and becomes reclusive, and it’s just this quirky, cool postmodern book. I’d recommend it. Also, this week I’ve had the pleasure of learning about some monstrous papers to come in the future. An 8-pager due pretty soon, and a 10-pager due in like 10 weeks (so I guess I can’t complain much about that one). These are the longest papers I’ll have ever written, and honestly I hope it helps me continue to improve at writing. They’ll be some good tests of my abilities. Oh, also tonight I’m going to see a “voice play” put on by BW with my mom. I forget the name (shame on me), but it’s a play that’s all spoken by four people… if I remember correctly. One of my professors (Dr. Dolzani) is actually in it, so this will be a nice cultural experience for me, and makes for some quality time with mommy dearest : ).
I’ll let you guys know how it is later on. Until then, readers.

I have discovered that while 8am classes are tragically early and not at all agreeable when I’ve gone to bed at two o’clock the night before, they ARE very conducive to productivity. Because once I have roused myself at this ungodly hour, I have in a sense already begun to “seize the day”. There isn’t even the possibility for wasted time on these 8am days. My seminar classes, lasting from 8 to 1 take up a large portion of the day but still allow me to accomplish work in the afternoon and work at the Cyber in the evening….plus time with friends which helps to maintain my sanity.

But! All of this eight o’clock nonsense will be over in only three weeks! (Which is when my Seminar in Europe classes end and my spring break begins!). We actually just got our itinerary the other day and i am consequently ECSTATIC! Having a tangible schedule of our time abroad has definitely increased my excitement x 1000000.

On March 18, our lovely little group of thirty-six will gather up at the Cleveland airport, zip up to New York and then fly our way over to Greece! I can’t even wrap my mind around being. in. Greece. After all of the studying we’ve done of these European cultures, getting to see and experience them is going to be doubly as incredible as it would have been if we’d just gone without the courses. Anyway, I think Greece and France have tied for first as the two countries i am most excited to visit. Can’t wait. I’ll have to post updates as to what I think once I’ve placed these two feet of mine on their soil. Until then. Or, just until more personal discoveries or realizations I guess.

Printers

Now that I’ve cooled off a bit I can tell this.

I had all the materials I needed for my audition on my computer. Namely, my music and my resume, my monologues had already been printed out. I would have dealt with this at school, but of course there is no ink in my printer, and those cartridges cost 25 more dollars than I can afford. Lets look at that analytically for a bit. A pen is ink, contained in plastic, and it costs 15 cents. An ink cartridge is also ink, contained in plastic, and it costs $25? Either it’s made of unicorn blood or we’re all getting screwed over.

Anyway, so it’s a couple hours before the audition and I’m attempting to print my material. I thought I had printed in my own house before. Apparently not.

End result: I don’t have the driver, and neither can I download it because my computer decides it would like to freeze every time. This wouldn’t have been such an issue if it weren’t for a few formatting problems. I could have just emailed it to my home computer if I didn’t have a ghetto word-processor called “Pages” that I made my resume on, and if I didn’t have an enormous PDF entitled “Hair, Piano Conductor’s score” that contained my music. Both files, of course, were non transferrable.

End end result: Me stream-of-consciousness monologue-berating my computer, my printer, drivers, word-processors, printer ink and threatening it in every way at the highest volume possible.

End end end result: Remaking the resume, finding a flashdrive, and printing it, one hour later.

End end end end result: Successful audition after a harrowing day!

Busy Days..and Nights

Hey guys. This week has been pretty crazy for me. Lots of meetings, homework, and the always dreaded dentist appointment.

But Wednesday night was ridiculous. I’m sitting in my dorm doing homework and getting ready to go to bed because of my 8 o’clock class the next morning, when my door bursts open and is flooded by three of my friends dressed in all black with camouflage face painting and flash lights yelling that they were giving me one and a half minutes to change into all blacks and then we were going to go on an adventure.

So I gave in, got dressed really fast, and we went on an adventure to Coe Lake in the middle of the night to be “mischievous.” Mind you, “mischievous” for my friends ended up in actually walking on Coe Lake’s ice (I was pretty nervous), and drawing hearts and making snow angels all over. I know. Soooooo mischievous. XD

But yeah. It was fun. Coe Lake is really pretty because of the snow. And noisy. All the stupid geese crammed into one little spot on the lake equals massive goose fighting.

So my first month back at school has been pretty hectic, though I’m getting into the swing of things now. My fellow Conservatory members are getting ready to present the opera “Our Town” next week. Since this year I was lucky enough to get out of doing the opera (It’s a LOT of commitment). This week and next week students are auditioning also for Bach Fest, one of the Conservatory’s biggest events of the year. The orchestra is cut down by more than half, to represent a more accurate sized ensemble.

Other than that, my Chemistry has been going pretty well. O-Chem 2 picks up right where 1 left off, and it’s still a ton of information to memorize, but other than that, it’s not too bad. As long as you keep on task with all the reading and work, it’s not too bad.

Last night, however, was fantastic. I went to see violinist DBR, Daniel Bernard Roumain, who came to BW last night. If you watched American Idol, when Lady Gaga performed “Poker Face” he was the violinist playing with her. He played some incredible improv for us, as well as talking about what music and being a violinist meant for him. It was a really inspiring show, and was amazing to watch.

YES! Interviews are afoot

Today, I tried to do something I have never done… Go and get nice clothes. I honestly almost never dress up. My girlfriend hates it. I have a total of 3 dress shirts. White, Black, and a Gunmetal gray… I have one pair of khakis and one pair of black slacks… Well. I got called back for two interviews and group interview for Resident Assistant on Saturday. So instead of going to such a thing in my (insert random organization on school) T-shirt and Jeans, I have to look nice. So I hop into my vehicle with from of my Fraternity Brothers and we went to the Strongsville Mall. Stopped into Macys and JC Pennys and was able to pick up a dress shirt and tie, a nice pair of dark khaks, and some long sleeve polos and sweaters…. (It was only $7 a shirt, STEAL!)

So now I don’t look like a hobo, so yay! Dress for success is what they say. Let’s hope it works!

Injury..woof.

Hey guys, sorry i haven’t been in much of a blogging mood. I currently have some kind of injury under my arm, resulting in having to sit out of our volleyball tournament this weekend. I’m currently on some antibiotics to make this lump in the back part of my armpit go down, and if it doesn’t I probably will end up at the hospital. woof. woof. woof.
Besides that, I’m just doing work and trying to make time go by faster by looking forward to spring break. Myself and two of my friends might road trip it to California. I believe it would be to Costa Mesa and I am soooo excited. We are still sorting out details but I’ll be sure to let you know.

Untill next time,
