Almost the weekend!

November 30, 2006

Its Thursday, which means the weekend is not far away. For me I just have 2 classes tomorrow and I’ll be done. We have an invitational swim meet this weekend at Fredonia, NY and we leave at 1:30 tomorrow. Its going to be interesting swimming with 5 teams we have never swam before, going to a new place and swimming at a new pool. Also, I get to swim the hardest event for the first time this season. I’m kind of scared. It’s the 400 individual medley, which is a 100 yards of each stroke, for those of you who don’t know.:o
But, overall I think this should be a good meet, and it is the last one of this semester. Talking about the semester, I can’t wait for Dec 14th, the day I write my last final. This semester has been thus far the hardest, most work-consuming semester for me. Papers, tests, presentations..done so many and still continue to do more!!!
So, I think I’m going to celebrate once I’m done. And I get to go to good old Texas on the 15th, can’t wait for that.:) But I can’t lose focus now, I got to get back to studying for finals and writing papers.

Have a good weekend everybody!

Racquetball with President Durst!

November 30, 2006

I didn’t want to spoil things with the title, but I felt it was the only appropriate one. To explain, about a week ago I left my intramural volleyball game (B-W has great intramural sports/leagues!) and happened to stop by the racquetball courts. What I saw were two of my friends playing racquetball…with B-W’s very own President Durst! Along with the small crowd that had already gathered, needless to say, I was intrigued.

Upon seeing me, President Durst asked if I wanted to join for a game of doubles. To preface this, I have played racquetball before and I very much enjoy it. It’s a fun game if you’ve never tried it. Anyway, I grab a racquet and step in to the game. The first game, I got to be on President Durst’s team - I quickly realized what a huge advantage this was :) In short, President Durst is a phenomenal athlete - athletic, smart, patient, and fluid with his motions. It only took a few serves to realize that I lucked out by having him as a partner.

We won the first game 15-6. The second game we switched up teams, and I was on the receiving end of his amazing serves. His team won again, but it was a lot of fun and we could see a large crowd had gathered to watch the games. We all congratulated on another for their play and called it a night. Looking back on the event, it’s just incredible to know that we have a President that is willing to not only be out among the students at 9:30pm, but that he’s willing to participate and challenge us outside of the classroom environment. Plus, for bragging rights alone, it’s nice to say that I’ve played racquetball with the President of Baldwin-Wallace College!

I definitely need to get in some more practice and experience before I try to take him on one-on-one though :)

Thanksgiving Break!

November 29, 2006

I had an amazing Thanksgiving break! It was tough coming back to school that Sunday, but I realize that I only have three more weeks left for this entire school year since I will be leaving for Australia soon. I love going home and I always have a great time with my friends and family. My friends from home always make a big deal of getting together over the holidays. Everyone comes to my house (about 15 of us) and hang out all night. It makes me realize how lucky I am to have such good friends in my life, and that even when we go our separate ways, when we get together it’s as if we have never skipped a beat. I really enjoyed getting to see my family which is always fun. My boyfriend was able to come down for the last few days of break so we had a good time and he got introduced to all of my crazy friends. Thanksgiving was low-key as it is just my mom, dad, brother and me. I like it that way because I feel like I am not obligated to go or do anything the whole day except for help out with the meal and watch football. School start is starting to pick up as we are nearing the end of the semester. Only three more full weeks! It is somewhat bittersweet, because a part of me wants to go home and hang out for a few months (literally), but then I won’t get the opportunity to see all the people up here I care about. I rarely get to see my roommate because she still plays basketball and we have really different schedules so I wish I can find more time to spend with her before I leave. So much to do, so little time.

My camouflage t-shirt…

November 29, 2006

I was just looking at the pictures on this page and I realized that I need to explain something. Yes, I am wearing a camouflage t-shirt. It’s not to make a fashion statement or to be invisible… Ha Ha Ha. It’s actually our Mid-Night Madness shirt. Everyone on our staff has one and we wear them on Thursdays (the day of our events). It’s great publicity for us and a way for students to recognize the staff at events.

One thing about B-W, you will have about 5 million free t-shirts in your drawer before you graduate. It’s pretty funny. Ok, I guess 5 million is an exaggeration but you know what I mean. Almost any event that I have helped out with or participated in has been another occasion for a shirt.
Free food and free t-shirts will always get students to participate in anything!

…then finals week! Yikes!

November 28, 2006

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I know I did but the break definitely threw me off. It was hard getting back into a routine but it’s crunch time now! Only 2 weeks left of classes, then finals week! Yikes!
Luckily, I don’t have a lot of actual tests. Being English majors we are given a lot of papers or projects as finals and then we just meet during our final exam period. One class that I am particularly excited about is Creative Writing. I didn’t think I would enjoy it or do very well because I am inexperienced in the art of story writing but it turned out to be the complete opposite. I’ve loved it and even registered for advanced creative writing for next semester. For our finals, we have to revise a story but on the actual day of the final we are sharing our work with the class so it should be an interesting class. I think it’s a great idea to take classes out of your comfort zone because you may surprise yourself!

Post-Thanksgiving Slump

November 28, 2006

Well, Thanksgiving was great! A nice time to relax, visit with family, and get plenty of food :) However, after a 5 day break, it’s a little tough to get back in the swing of things.

Along with going back to class and meetings, it is also intimidating to think that these next 3 weeks are going to be packed with a lot of stuff!
Along with end of the semester wrap ups for organizations, I’ll have to face FINALS WEEK!

For me, being an English major, that means that I have a few papers to write. These shouldn’t be too bad, being that I enjoy writing and I can kind of argue my points to my favor. However, the final that I am dreading is my Discrete Math II final. For those loyal subscribers, that would be the same math class that I wrote about earlier where I got a C on the last test. The final is comprehensive, which means it covers everything we’ve done this semester, and should be a bear! Also, between now and finals week, we’re going to have another math test. Needless to say, I’m going to have my hands full! However, this anxiety will pass once I get going on some of the projects that lie ahead. Just some pre-finals jitters :)

Back in the Sunshine Again (Literally)

November 28, 2006

Well, Thanksgiving was really nice, especially thanks to the amazing weather we are having. Over break i had a really nice thanksgiving day with my family and my extended fam (my grandparents and my uncle/aunt/cousins). On friday i didn’t do much. On saturday i went to the hard rock in cleveland, then to the christmas story house (which wasn’t quited finished making it a let down) then to the x-mas parade then to the cheesecake factory for the first time. i had fun everywhere. it was good. well, now that we are back at BW, i’m looking forward to the MNM this week which is family feud (one of my fav game shows) and i don’t know what else is going on, but family feud is going to hold me this week. soon exams will be kicking in. well, i’ll check back later. til then…

One of the best breaks ever!

November 27, 2006

Hello everybody! How is everyone doing? Hope you had a good thanksgiving!
I surely did. To me, thanksgiving is definitely one of my favorite holidays. My mother always said that, I’m born lazy, hehe! And I definitely proved her right during this break. My 5 day break can be literally summed up in just three words- eat, sleep and shop.

From the time we got to my friends house in Columbus, which was on Tuesday night, all we did was eat and sleep. We did quite a bit of shopping the day after thanksgiving and on Saturday. I am proud to say that I am quite the economist when it comes to shopping. Although I love shopping, I look for good deals and stuff I can get for the best price possible:) So all the sales and clearance makes me one happy shopper.

It was wonderful spending thanksgiving with my friend and her family.
Every year I get to spend it with someone new and the experience is great.
It’s amazing how the same holiday can be celebrated in so many different ways, apart from the food which is almost the same everywhere.

Anyways, that was about my break and when Sunday came, we were definitely not ready to come back to school. But the fact that we have only 3 more weeks of this semester makes it that much better. I have to run to practice now, but I’ll be back with more soon:) Have a great week ahead!

Berean Thanksgiving

November 27, 2006

Thanksgiving on campus ended up being pretty ok. On Tuesday when I bought my own turkey and my friends were all packing up to leave and they kept asking if I was really ok staying, it got a little depressing, but the time actually went pretty fast and I got quite a bit accomplished. The end of the semester always gets pretty insane with everything that’s due and I spent a large part of the time making my woodwinds portfolio. In every methods class we have to put together a resource portfolio, and this one was basically one big compilation of everything about teaching flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon. The time I didn’t spend homework-ing, I spent in the Con which was absolutely dead this weekend. There is always a ton of energy, so it was really kind of eerie to walk into a dark and silent building. I got to practice on stage all weekend though which was really cool. I was sad to go back to a practice room this morning. My friends came back Sunday afternoon and we went to the orchestra to hear Mendelssohn 3. The best thing about breaks is always seeing everyone again. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving 

Thanksgiving

November 27, 2006

This Thanksgiving i was grateful for a lot of things, but the thing i am most thankful for is: NO CLASS FOR THREE DAYS!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!! It is so nice to not have class for three days. Trust me, after ten weeks of class, a three day break is well needed. And thankfully, my teachers didn’t assign a lot of homework for the weekend (the little i have i’ll do sunday night. shhh!) BW is nice enough to give us three days (i’d like a week, but hey.)

Thanksgiving was fun today. I ate as much as the six adults at my table did combined (that’s what ten weeks of union food does to ya). I especially loved the pumpkin and apple pies. i love pies. well, that’s all for now, i’ll write soon and tell you about the rest of my thanksgiving weekend.
