Aladdin’s

Aladdin’s

October 2, 2009

It has become an official Thursday night tradition for my friend Danielle and I to visit the lovely little Aladdin’s eatery up the street. Aladdin’s serves Mediterranean food. The menu is the size of a decent novella (though the pages are sort of thick), filled with hot wraps, pitas, and an endless number of appetizers. Last night when Danielle and I went we brought with us two quite incredible appetites. So we began with our usual plate of hummus (with hot sauce), plate of tabbouleh and basket of pita. (My mouth is watering with the mere recollection of this splendor.) Then we decided to try Dahwali (spelling?): grape leaves stuffed with rice and chick peas. The flavor was sort of lemony and definitely somewhat exotic, yet SO GOOD. I’m pretty convinced that I would enjoy anything from Aladdin’s. They are masters of flavor.

Three baskets of pita bread later we decided that we HAD to get cake…no matter how full we were. Because Aladdin’s is also famous for their cake selections. Pumpkin and chocolate cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate bomb cake, chocolate lovers’ cake, lemon dream cake etc etc etc. Last night was a Chocolate Lovers’ Cake night. Undoubtably. The only thing that was missing from this chocolate delicacy experience was a cup of black coffee.

Needless to say the night was magnifique even if we did remain at Aladdin’s for an outrageous two hours. I can’tttt wait for next Thursday. Here’s to new desserts and Mediterranean delicacies.

(ps definitely try it!)

I like food: Vol 2: The Cesar Salad

September 21, 2009

I just wanted to tell the world that I really like food. If I could have any job in the world, I would love to be a taste tester for restaurants and be those awesome people on shows like “Top Chef” or “Iron Chef”…
But, reality kicks in and I do not have that luxury of doing that. Luckily for me, B-W has its own form of fine cuisine… Today’s lunch, was definitely one of the BEST EVAR!!!

The Cesar salad, usually quite meh in most places, when you eat it, you’re like, there is no way that romans ate this… This is so meh…. Well, after much word of mouth here at B-W from my fellow students, I broke down and tried the Cesar Salad today… This is no regular cesar salad mind you, this is the work of Roman gods, or at least of the kind ladies at Lang dining hall. My cesar was made to order with grilled chicken and steak. It had garlic, and delicious dressing. Topping it off was cheese and just a squeeze of fresh lemon.

So if you are here on B-W, or coming for a visit, I recommend getting the Gourmet Cesar Salad… Once again, David Tran approved! :)

The Cyber Cafe

September 10, 2009

So because I am a work study student, I have been searching relentlessly for a campus job during the last couple of weeks. Finally on Tuesday I secured a job at both the Cyber Cafe and the Colony Room. Last night at around six thirty (and after much frenzy) I ran down to the Cyber for my first night of training. The Cyber Cafe is an on campus coffee shop in the basement of the student union. They sell coffee (obviously), smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream, sandwiches etc etc etc. It’s basically like midnight snack/sweet tooth central. Needless to say I was excited to be on the opposite side of the counter.

Because I’ve never worked in this kind of setting before, I had to learn everyyyything. Kim, one of the other girls who works there taught me everything she knows and more over the two and a half hours that I was there. The first thing we did was make cookies (yum), which meant learning to operate the toaster oven (no big deal). Then, as people came and ordered things, she showed me how to make them. Milkshakes are without a doubt, the most annoying things to make. First, you have to scoop an exorbitant amount of ice cream into a large metal cup. Then, fill it with just the right amount of milk (this is hard to judge). Then, for the milkshake machine. This is where my heart starts beating really fast and my hands practically freeze to the sides of the cup. So you are supposed to shove the cup of ice cream and milk onto the machine so the wand is in the center of the ice cream and so the lip of the cup is under the button thing. The issue is twisting and turning the cup in just the right, and most efficient manner in order to encourage a smooth, desired milkshake consistency. But I guess after more practice, this will be less intimidating.

I also learned how to make mochas, lattes, smoothies (easy shmeasy), cream sodas, and bubble tea! Bubble tea is the cafe’s newest drink and is a smoothie consistency but has large beads of tapioca in the bottom that taste like gummy bears. It’s different, but good!

I’m definitely still learning all of the “ways of the cyber” and need time to sort of develop my own techniques. But it’s definitely a fun job and keeps you moving and energized. I also like it because I will get a chance to meet a lot of new people. So many students come through the Cyber, that you are constantly in contact with so many different faces. It’s fun to talk to people who sit at the counter too while you work. Or to see friends who are passing through.
So if you end up at BW, prospective student, stop by the Cyber! Yum!
